Automatic transcription and subtitling

Overview

Aditu is Elhuyar’s speech recognition web service. It offers the possibility of automatically transcribing or subtitling audios and videos in Basque, Spanish or in both languages. Through an advanced editing interface, the result can also be automatically corrected and translated into six languages by means of machine translation. Translations can also be corrected in the interface, and on completion can be downloaded in a range of formats. Aditu uses Orai technology for the purpose of automatic transcription, subtitling and translating.

Challenge

Automatic transcription technology in itself is a challenge and even more so for a poorly-resourced language like Basque; in particular, under special conditions or in special cases: local speech forms, informal registers, noisy environments, poor audio quality, personalisation (to correctly recognise local words, place names and proper names), children’s voices, speaker identification, etc.  We are also working on live transcription for lectures and video calls, for example, or for producing dictations in the case of people with disabilities.

Result

Orai transcription technology achieves very good results under suitable conditions in Basque and Spanish as well as in both languages. It is integrated into Aditu which has many users and customers, mainly in the fields of education and communication. In the above-mentioned special cases we are continually upgrading and incorporating these improvements into Aditu.
